Cristiano Ronaldo Handed 30-Day Ban and $285 Fine After Portugal Team Dispute
Cristiano Ronaldo has received a 30-day ban and a $285 fine from the Portuguese Football Federation after a dispute with coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the national team, raising questions about the suspension's timing and impact.
The Portuguese federation’s disciplinary unit upheld the charges against Ronaldo, confirming the 30-day ban and financial penalty. However, Ronaldo’s side of the story adds another dimension to the controversy, as the forward has accused Jesus of breaking promises regarding his role in the team on two occasions.
Ronaldo reportedly left Portugal’s national team camp ahead of the Nations League match against Denmark. He alleged that he had not been brought on as a substitute against Norway and claimed that the coach had twice broken his promises concerning his role within the squad.
The dispute escalated further after Jesus rejected all of Ronaldo’s allegations. Despite dismissing the claims, the coach said the door remained open for Ronaldo to return to the team.
According to the disciplinary findings, Ronaldo violated Article 160(1) of the disciplinary regulations. However, the federation’s statement did not specify which matches or period the 30-day suspension would cover. It also did not clarify whether the suspension had already been served.
Ronaldo has the option to appeal the punishment, although he has already apologised in connection with the incident. He said he had expected to be punished but has not issued a personal response specifically addressing the 30-day suspension or the 5 fine.
During the Nations League campaign, Ronaldo featured in Portugal’s opening match against Wales. However, he was not used even as a substitute in the match against Norway on September 27.
The disciplinary action leaves questions about the precise scope and timing of Ronaldo’s suspension unanswered, as the federation has not disclosed the matches affected or confirmed whether the ban remains in effect.
